Photos are typically planned in advance. I'm out and about quite a lot so when I see good vantage points I'll plan a photo session around sunrise/sunset. My camera usually always with me and sometimes you can get lucky with a chance shot but the good ones are planned. Mostly when I take a photo it's been in the pipeline for a few days, even weeks sometimes.

The photo above I took on Monday 8 January this year. It was very cold, about -10°C. The spot is about 3,5km from my house so I walked there, set up the camera and tripod and waited until magic time (about 15 minutes), took a few shots, packed up and went back home. All very clinical but the planning paid off.
