To get started with lightning photography, you’ll need the right gear. A DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual settings is ideal, paired with wide-angle and telephoto lenses for flexibility in framing shots.
A sturdy tripod is essential for long exposures, and a remote shutter release helps avoid camera shake during these exposures. Additionally, protective gear such as rain covers for your camera and weather-appropriate clothing for yourself is crucial to ensure both you and your equipment stay safe and dry.

Finding the right conditions is crucial for successful lightning photography. Thunderstorms are a must, but consider the time of day—dusk and night often provide the best opportunities for lightning photography.
Likewise, open areas with a clear view of the sky are ideal for capturing lightning but always prioritize safety when selecting your location. Seek out areas that might provide you with protective cover yet still give you a panoramic view of the coming storm.

Getting the settings right can make or break your lightning shots, so dialing in the appropriate settings is paramount. Here are a few basic tips to get you started:
- Set your camera to manual mode to have full control over exposure.
- Using an aperture of f/8 to f/11 works well to balance depth of field and sharpness.
- Long exposures, starting at 10-30 seconds, increase your chances of capturing a strike.
- Keep your ISO low (100-200) to minimize noise, and switch to manual focus, setting it to infinity.

Several techniques can enhance your chances of success. Long exposure photography allows you to capture multiple strikes in one frame. Combining several shots in post-processing to create a composite image with more lightning strikes can be very effective in creating a dramatic shot!
Of course, timing and anticipation are key—pay attention to the frequency of lightning and press the shutter just before you expect a strike. There’s a lot of luck involved in this, too, of course. But as the storm unfolds, you should be able to get a feel for the rhythm and frequency of lightning and anticipate the next flash.

Great lightning photos aren’t just about the lightning; composition matters, too. Including interesting foreground elements provides context and depth. Utilize the rule of thirds and leading lines to enhance your composition. Capturing a variety of shots, including wide, medium, and close-up shots, can help create a diverse range of lightning images as well.
If you want to elevate your lightning photography to the next level, invest in a lightning trigger so you can automatically capture strikes and increase your success rate. Experiment with different perspectives, too, such as reflections in water or shooting from high vantage points. Above all else, don’t put yourself in harm’s way for a photograph. While it’s exhilarating to capture an epic shot of nature’s beauty, it isn’t worth life or limb to get it!
Showcasing and Sharing Your Work
Once you’ve captured and edited your lightning photos, it’s time to share them. And by “share,” I don’t necessarily mean on social media…
