I guess I'd add: find a niche.

Fashion and landscape photographers struggle, while I know someone who shoots plates of food and probably makes close to $250k/year.

You need a website for your photography business. If you don't have a big budget for a website, you can always DIY and create a website using a website builder like hPage: www.hpage.com which has a slideshow gallery and other business features at only 4.99 a month. 

You also need to brand your photography business first. Layout the digital media touchpoints as well as a branding plan before marketing yourself out there.
