Why photos distorted after f/18?

What causes photos to get distorted when you move your aperture on a lens past f/18?  Mechanically, what is causing the issue?

What do you mean by "distorted"?

Certainly, as the aperture gets smaller (the f-number gets larger), the Diffraction-Limit sets in, but that results in an inability of an optical system to render a sharp image, not " distortion " per se.

When you narrow down the aperture of your lens to settings like f/18 or smaller, diffraction becomes the primary issue that leads to image distortion. Diffraction is a physical phenomenon caused by light bending around the edges of the aperture blades within the lens. As the aperture becomes smaller, the amount of bending increases, causing the light rays to interfere with each other and spread out more. This spreading reduces the sharpness and detail in the image, manifesting as a general softening or blurring that some might perceive as distortion.
