Canon EOS R100: Overview
The Canon EOS R100 is an entry-level mirrorless camera that debuted in the summer of 2023. It retails for only $499 new, and a used Canon EOS R100 in “like-new” condition is currently hovering around $350. That’s one heck of a bargain if you ask us! Especially if you are a smartphone photographer looking to upgrade to a proper camera for photos and video.
Canon designed the EOS R100 as a mirrorless alternative to their incredibly popular Rebel lineup of Canon DSLR cameras. For example, it mimics many specs and features of the Canon EOS Rebel T8i.
Internally, the Canon EOS R100 houses a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, a Digic 8 Image processor, and a Dual Pixel autofocus system. The Dual Pixel AF is especially impressive, making shooting sharp, in-focus content easy for beginners. While it does have human face/eye detection technology, it can’t recognize other subjects (animals, vehicles, etc.).
Now, here’s a closer look at the Canon EOS R100 specs and key features:
Canon EOS R100: Design & Handling
As an affordable camera, you won’t be surprised to hear that the Canon EOS R100 isn’t built like a tank. It features an entirely plastic design and is not weather-sealed. There are pluses and minuses of this, however. For instance, a pro is that the camera is super lightweight and portable, which most new photographers want. On the downside, it is less durable than other budget cameras, like the Canon EOS RP.
The R100's controls are super simple. Unlike professional cameras with tons of control dials and buttons, the R100 has a minimalist design to help streamline efficiency. On the top of the camera, there is one control dial and one mode dial. On the back, there is a fixed display and a handful of well-labeled buttons. Furthermore, the menu system is intuitive and easy to navigate.
Regarding handling and ergonomics, the R100 feels comfortable in the hands, and the controls can all be operated with one hand. One drawback, though, is that for some inexplicable reason, Canon decided to omit touchscreen capabilities on the rear screen. Furthermore, if you have large hands, you may find the grip a tad on the small side.

Canon EOS R100: Imaging Capabilities
With a max resolution of 24.2MP, the Canon EOS R100 is comparable to other entry-level cameras, such as the Sony Alpha a6100 and Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark I, for still photography. Whether you are shooting photos for personal use or for posting to social media, the R100 image quality is more than sufficient.
However, we did notice that the R100 could perform better in low-light conditions. This can be attributed to the camera's smaller sensor (APS-C vs. full-frame) and narrow ISO range. For example, when shooting at medium and high ISO levels, some noise is visible in your images. We recommend investing in a portable lighting kit like the Hobolite Mini to combat noise.
Another imaging feature to consider is burst shooting. When shooting continuously with the R100, the maximum speed is 6.5 frames per second (3.5 fps with AF). While this is good for everyday photography, if you plan to shoot a lot of sport, wildlife, or action photography, we recommend the Canon EOS R50 instead.
Canon EOS R100: Video Capabilities
The Canon EOS R100 is a good video camera for people new to video content creation who want to learn the basics of videography. It has 4K video capabilities and slow-motion video recording. With that said, two important things to note are that a 1.5x crop factor is applied to the camera's 4K/24p footage and that slow-mo video is filmed in 720p/120p.
We suggest filming 1080p Full HD video with the R100. Its video quality is solid, there is no crop, and it takes up less space on your memory cards than 4K video. Another video-oriented feature we like is the inclusion of a microphone port. Although the camera has a built-in speaker, attaching an external mic allows you to monitor audio levels closer and enhances final results.
